“Yugen is a Japanese aesthetic concept: an awareness of the universe
which evokes feelings that are deep and too mysterious for words”

Yugen Artists is composed of a small group of artists from multi-cultural backgrounds led by Hiroshi Yamamoto, a renowned Japanese Canadian artist and mentor to the other 5 members of the group.   Mr. Yamamoto has held over 20 exhibitions in Toronto and Japan.
Other members include Nicole Tamir, Neli Iordanova, Azra Rashid, and Kate Cherney each with over 15 years of Sumi-e study and practice.

Sumi-e is traditional Japanese art of ink paintings which combines simplicity and
spontaneity. The objective of Sumi-e is not to recreate the subject to look perfectly like the
original, but to capture its essence — that is, to express its essence. This exhibition
represents creative expressions pursued by Toronto artists, inspired by Nature.
