Part 1: Saturday, June 6th, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm via Zoom

This workshop is in real time and with a live instructor walking you through all of the material. In this workshop students will explore how colour works in relation to its neighbours on the colour wheel. We will paint our way through true primary, secondary and tertiary colours along with homologous, analogous, complimentary, split compliments, triads and tetrads. Along the way we will gain some language about colour from hue, warm, cool, tint, tone, shade. intensity, and what each colours value is on the grey scale.   We will also look at Colour Theorists, Itten, Munsell, and Goethe. This is a hands on workshop where you may use the paint you already have to create useful colour wheels and value scales that help you further understand what your chosen palette can do.

2. 12 part colour wheel by Itten
3. Goethe colour triangle
4. Complimentary colour strips x 3 , learning about tertiaries
5. Tint and shade strips of primary/secondary colours x 6

Material list:

• Paper exercises: We email you the exercises to print at home or you can pick them up from Lucsculpture.
• Blank paper: in strips 2” thick and however long , lots of them (around 10)
• Tools: – water containers, paper towels, palette, brushes,(flats and rounds that are soft talkyon or watercolor brushes are best) & paint, scissors, a brass fastener for colour wheel (optional).
• Paint: The minimum colours needed for this workshop are: titanium white, (mars) black, primary yellow, primary red or primary magenta, primary blue or cyan. You can use any yellow, red and blue and see what comes out of what exists in your paint kit. If true primaries are unavailable then owning a medium red, magenta, lemon yellow, medium yellow, ultramarine blue, pthalo blue (green shade) are your best options. Paint can be Gouache or Acrylic. Avoid oil, watercolour or tempera as they have challenges that do not work well with colour theory.
• Furnishings: A flat table, good lighting & space to let stuff dry
• Technology: a computer or ipad that can be hooked up to zoom- so we can see each other. An iphone or camera that has a monochromatic capability in edit mode.
